THE CONGRESS

SÃO PAULO IS HOSTING THE 1st. CONGRESS ON URBAN PLANNING, AIMED AT THINKING ABOUT LIFE IN THE CITIES

The cities currently concentrate 54% of the world population, summing up to 3.9 billion people, according to study carried out in 2014 by the United Nations. UN estimates that, by 2050, this number will reach 66%. This scene proves it is increasingly urgent to discuss provisions to be made so as to enable urban areas to be more human and productive places to live in society.

Focused on this need, the 1st. International Congress on Urban Landscape will take place in São Paulo on December 7 and 8, 2015

Conceived by Regina Monteiro, architect and urban planner who created the “Clean City Act” (Lei Cidade Limpa) in São Paulo, the Congress will present experiences of urban planners from Barcelona (Spain), Bogota (Colombia) and Lima (Peru), besides works carried out by experts in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Fortaleza and Ribeirão Preto. Aimed at exchanging ideas and sharing projects, the Congress shall enable participants to evaluate how experiences may be applied in different cities.

CURRENT SCENE

In large cities there are movements today towards regaining public spaces for the citizens. São Paulo, for instance, has been investing for almost one decade on prioritizing collective transportation, instead of promoting private solutions – although results are still quite incipient –, on widening bike ways, to enable bicycles to be used as effective means of transportation, and, above all, on recovering pedestrians’ role as the main element of the displacement structure in the metropolis.

In this same context, the “Clean City Act” (Lei Cidade Limpa) was passed in the capital city, aimed at reducing visual pollution to the minimum possible, by prohibiting external publicity in outdoors, and by ruling the use of advertisement on outside façades of commercial buildings. Thanks to this lawq, São Paulo became the world reference as to normative standards and rules for the urban landscape.

Much is still to be done. But prior to actions, much is still to be thought about solutions for life in the cities. And the 1st. International Congress on Urban Landscape is intended to be the forum where uses for the urban landscape will be discussed.
